The Consulate General of Nigeria was opened in 2008 in response to the growing economic and trade relations between Nigeria and China. It was established to attract investment and economic activities as a component of the overall development strategies of Nigeria. The Consulate also co-ordinates, promotes and protects the national interests of Nigeria and Nigerians in the five Provinces of China, namely; Shanghai Municipality, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
The activities of the Consulate therefore are geared towards the overall promotion of economic and trade relations between China and Nigeria. It provide consular services and assistance to Nigerians residing particularly within the area of its consular jurisdiction. It also provides visa and other consular services to Chinese and foreign residents in these Provinces.
